Grammar Review: Nouns and Pronouns

Participation: Summer School Planner
  • Pass out the Summer School planner
    • Students get one each week.
    • Explain the funtion of the planner.
    • Have students add their goals for this week, as well as the learning objectives/homework for Monday and Tuesday.


Reading Section: Identifying the Short Story Elements of "Gift of the Magi"
  • Students listen/read the story again.
  • Students work in groups of 3 to 4.
  • Students create a graphic organizer with 5 boxes.
    • Give a model on the board: one box for...
      • setting
      • point of view
      • characters
      • plot
        • conflict
      • theme

Reading Section: Reading Dialectical Journal "Gift of the Magi" p. 6-13
    • Explain dialectical journals: Dialectical Journal Template.pdf
    • Students will finish this assignment as homework.
    • Today in class, students find at least 3 quotations related to the THEME of the story to add to the Dialectical Journal. Their responses will be completed at home.
    • Students have 10 minutes to identify and copy 3 quotations.
      • Explain the difference between quotations and dialogue.
    • Complete the journal at home.

Reading Section: Evaluate and Connect "Gift of the Magi"
  • Respond to questions 11-15 on page 14.
    • Copy the question on the left side of your Cornell Notes, write your answer on the right side of your notes.

Grammar and Writing: Verbs


Writing Section: Quick Write -- Media
  • How much time do you spend with media?
  • What do you listen to/read/watch the most?

Reading Section: Mark the Text
  • "Young People Spending More Time With Media Than Ever"
    • Scan for vocabulary, define unfamiliar words.
    • Mark The Text as we read
      1. Number the paragraphs.
      2. Circle key words (not words you don't know, but words that are important)
      3. Underline important facts and details.
    • Also, as we read, write a brief summary in the margins of the text. The teacher will stop you and tell you when to write these summary sentences.

Writing Section: Young People and Media
  • So what? What is the significance of young people spending a lot of time with media? Why is it important?
  • Write a paragraph with your response.
    • Topic Sentence
    • Background Information
    • Quotation (According to the article, "...)
    • Explain the quotation and explain why it is important.
    • End with a personal connection: Why is this important for you?
